Wow, it's been a while since we've updated the hemispheres blog!
I was in Egypt for almost three weeks doing a course. It was really intensive, but we managed to see quite a bit... read more here.
On the way back to Chile, we had a 12 hour layover in Paris. So.. what did we do?
We went out exploring in Paris!

My favorite part was going up the Eiffel Tower. The first time I was in Paris we didn't go up. I'm not a big fan of heights, it's a love-hate relationship. I enjoy it but I get a bit anxious if there are no railings around. We ended up going up, walking around, doing some fun videos and eating the rest of our macarrons (purchased at McDonalds, I'm classy:)

Paris is perfect. I mean, I could spend hours just walking and I would be happy!

I've grown into a place

one of my favorite things to do around Santiago is just to walk around, find random streets, take pictures and sit down to drink some coffee. when my cousin came to visit last month, we ended up in the musuem of contemporary art. it was so interesting to learn more about Chile through the musuem. around the time of the regime, a lot of art work was lost and stolen, so there's a huge gap in Chilean Art History. they recently started an intiative to recover back some of the past.

I just keep finding different reasons to fall in love with this country.

And really, the best thing is to walk. Just keep walking.

It has been one of my dreams to go barefoot to my wedding.

This past weekend I visited two cities by the sea. They are well known here in Chile, Valparaiso and Viña del Mar. It was just the break I needed during my holidays. Suprisingly, I really didn't want to do any long travelling and going by the seaside in the winter was the perfect fit for me.

It felt like I took a much needed breather. It was nice to disappear for a while, walk by the seaside, explore a new and quirky city and buy postcards to send. Valparaiso is known as the historical city of Chile. I am not sure how to translate the word, but the government makes sure nothing is changed around the city and graffittis are encouraged. It's a wonderland for those who love this art.

Oh, I want a holga. I love the effect of the camera, how it can be so surreal and abstract.

The cameras are varied and you can also attach lenses such as the fish-eye (my personal favorite), and you can modify the image by changing the way the film is placed into the camera.

Also, you can go lensless with a Holga, with the pinhole cameras.

There are so many different types.. I would go crazy!

Recently I have started to experiment with videos, but I still have a lot to learn! You have all probably heard of Carlos Lascano, but he is one of my favorite stop motion artists. I love his unique style, the way he uses digital tricks but also very real, organic details.

I've been watching a lot of project runway this weekend online, such a great way to destress. Last night I dreamt that I had created my own line of clothing, just for fun. The week before my mom commented that there were sewing classes at the local cultural centre. Coincidence? I think not. I would love to make my own clothes someday.

like che riding across the cordilleras

this past weekend I went to Mendonza, it's about an 8 hour trip from Santiago, heading up the mountains and through to Argentina. It was an incredible journey, passing by huge mountains in our bus, watching as they grew bigger and as we drove up, it seemed to never end.

Mendonza in itself wasn't very interesting to me, maybe because we didn't have a lot of days there and for being a very touristic city. It was packed filled with different restaurants and a very lovely street market. I just loved being able to just get away for a weekend, have good conversations and catch up on reading.

oh, and I got a dreadlock! which I haven't had the chance to get a good picture of. ha, soon I will. because I quite like it. a lot.

so my mom has started calling me a gypsy. when I got back from Argentina, I went straight to church with my roomate and she tried calling me that night. the next afternoon we both went to the children's home and that's when she said, "you really are a gypsy!"

I shall own up to it, I'm sure.

Meet Rita, George Harrison lover, music muse, organic line artist, tea lover, rock-chic and best from Brasil.

I met her in my brief year at art school, and just like kindred spirits, we hit off and have been friends ever since.

The thing I like about her art, it's completely her own. She uses lines, shapes, all created around a theme and it is always unique and you can stare endlessly at what she created with simple lines.

Listening to this artist, suggested to me by a dear friend. I have been going through my pictures and it seems endless. Most of you don't know, but I'm an aspiring photographer, part of my work here is to document everything that goes on within our organization. It has been challenging and I'm on the process of expanding and growing. Soon I'll be experimenting with photoshop, since I'll be learning in order to use it here.

These are from a small town in Southern Chile, Los Lagos, and a surrounding village, La Balsa. It's so ideal, I wish I could go back just to spend days photographing.

I'm back from my trip to the south. It was incredible! I will probably post a lot of pictures on my blog.

What do you wear when travelling? I wandered this as I packed the night before we left and during the trip. I think I was able to be creative even though with the stress of travelling and practicality. 

Layers for the cold, floral prints, leg-warmers, caps, all-stars are all amazing items to have in your backpack. Also, a variety of earrings adds a little snazz when your travelling clothes are a bit boring.

I can sum it all up in this phrase by Johnny Flynn,

"I'll travel light and that's the life for me!"

I'm busy packing for my trip to Southern Chile, I have procrastinated enough. Since we're doing a lot of different activities, it's hard to decide what to take. Our first stop is in a city called Chillian, where we'll have two days off, maybe see a waterfall. I seriously have no clue what it going to happen. That's the exciting part though!

I used this twice in the past week, it's comfortable and still looks nice. A pen pal of mine bought it as a present when I was visiting her and it has a drawing of a cat on the bottom sitting on a moon, I wish I had taken pictures with more specific details. 

Camilinha and I, such a cutie and a good friend!

 So I might be AWOL in the next month, but be praying for me in the next few weeks.

today was superb. slept in. made headway on work projects. had lunch at schulers. on spring break. lykke li's "wounded rhymes" album was released. yep. the simple things in life. 

reading harper's bazaar at schulers today i came across this quote that made me laugh: "who are fashion's biggest bloodsuckers? boring people" - karl lagerfeld ... DON'T BE ONE!! lol

on that note... outfit inspiration! goal for this month is to try some daring styles. this outfit is definitely safe... but stay tuned for more on the wild side!! ;)

this week is almost over and I'm relieved and at the same time sad because that means that the group of Brazilians that are here will go home. It's always hard to say goodbye especially after you had such a close and fun time.

in between the craziness of these past few weeks, painting, translating, and meeting new people I was able to sneak in some good looks.

my lovely friends, Camila and I have grown close and I managed ot become friends with her sister Gabriela as well. They're so fun, I can act like a 6 year old and they love me.

I'm wearing my favorite cardigan given to my by a friend, skirt by "M," leggings F21 and shoes are a gift from my mom, made in Chile.

some of the past days, we've had some chilly weather, and I'm getting more anxious for winter to blow our way. can you tell at all? hehe...

i first loved marc by marc jacobs spring 2011 orange lips (not to mention the fabulously frizzed manes of hair)...

...then it was derek lam's orange eyeliner...

okay, so the orange eyeliner might be a stretch for me (au naturale kind of a gal) ... but the lips and teased mane are more my kind of crazy. even acquired a rust shadow the other week. doubles as a blush too! next thing you know i'll be owning a coral jumpsuit ... yeah, probably not ;)

never let me go

these past two days, as I start to get ready for this new phase in my life (I am now in Santiago, Chile) I've been indulging in several movies. One that has stood among the rest is, "Never Let Me Go" based on the best-selling book by Kazuo Ishiguro. It is a story narrated by Kathy, remembering her boarding school days at Halsham, where they were encouraged to create and health was their first priority. It tells the story of three of these students, Ruth, Tommy and Kathy. These students don't have last names and are actually clones, being raised to become only organ donors.
Throughout the movie, there is this sense of finality, like you know where this is going to end, but there is still hope that the worst of your expectations will not come true. In the end, I don't think it's about clonning, but actually about life. The decisions we make, how we react to the experiences around us, and how when we look deeply into our lives, we ask ourselves, "why aren't we living?"
I loved it, especially starring Keira Knightly, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield. I watched the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnussus with Andrew Garfield, and have been excited to see him in other movies like the "Social Network."

"We all complete. Maybe none of us really understand what we've lived through, or feel we've had enough time."

I got my bangs cut this morning by my lovely mama. I was taking a break from packing and here is the damage:

recently, I came across the Burberry Acoustic on youtube, they are videos of different bands filmed all around London, usually with British bands that have been springing up. One of my favorites is "Life in Film." I just like their sound, seems to incorporate everything you would want to find in a British band.

i admit it. i don't wash my hair everyday. i rarely brush it. and i love my dry shampoo (label m dry shampoo btw). this dirty mess has even got me thinking of dreads. okay.. don't freak out! definitely not a full head... just a single dread underneath... maybe with a feather...

new year.

it's a new year. a clean slate. although i'm not keen on making resolutions for the new year, i am especially enthusiastic knowing that there are endless possibilities ahead.

looking back on 2010, i am satisfied. i turned 24. successfully navigated my first year of grad school. spent the summer backpacking abroad. climbed the eiffel tower. kayaked on the mediterranean. sailed the north sea. fell in love. got my tattoo. i am definitely full with satisfaction.

so... 2011? hmm. what shall these next 365 days entail? now 362...

i vow to...
a) blog more. here. with aline :)
b) discover my creative niche. take more risks.
c) travel abroad with my love.
d) find my way professionally. something that brings me joy.
e) love those around me w/more intentionality.
f) smile more.
g) eat more organic/natural foods ("you are what you eat!")
h) prepare for the future...rather than waiting for it to sneak up on me.
i) learn to savor the little things in life.

2011! how crazy is that? This year is going to be good, I can feel it in my bones.
Yesterday I did nothing productive, but I did watch a movie that I've been dying to watch: Coco before Chanel.
I never imagined her story to be like that, growing up as an orphan, waiting for her single parent to come take her home from the orphanage. She was fantastic, adhering to what she believed was true style and sticking to who she was as an individual.
As always, Audrey Tautou was marvelous and I especially liked when she finally personified what my image of Coco Chanel would be.

It made me appreciate couture more, except, I still think you can be fabulous without wearing labels. I

must say though, you have to admire how things were done and how they're still being done. I wouldn't mind wearing something like that once in a while. Yet, I know, that as long as I feel good about what I'm wearing, that's what matters. I think, though it may not seem like that now, Chanel wanted that. She was an outsider herself, and prized individuality.

Merry Christmas!
Yesterday I went out with a dear friend of mine, Rita, and we had fun exploring a nearby city called São Caetano do Sul. It's really close to where I live in São Paulo, so we hopped on a bus and went in search for some yummy pasteries. Except, being the day after christmas, the streets were empty and there was hardly anything open. So we hung out in a little park, talked and here is what I wore:

This dress is a vintage that I bought while in Chicago. There is a little place (I'm not sure it's little anymore) called Clothes Optional on Clark Avenue.

British Johnny Flynn came to land in my itunes when I started listening to Laura Marling (which deserves another post) They have sung together in, "the Water" and ever since then I've been hooked. Other songs like, "Travel Light" and "the Box" are on constant repeat. I have yet to over listen these two wonderful songs. I think his voice, that reminds you a bit of Johnny Cash, and well, the vocalist from the Tallest Man on Earth, is his biggest charm.
Taking out the fact that he is also a poet, actor and composer. I want to marry this man, really. He also has played a few times with lovely Mumford & Sons and I found him playing a beautiful song with his sister.
So be ready to be addicted.

The Weepies played at Calvin College last month. I've always adored them...especially since "The World Spins Madly On" reached my ears several years ago. The show was incredible. I was mesmerized by their effortless harmonies and eclectic vibe. My jaw might have been open for part of the time ;)

But my absolutely favorite track of their new album (released this past August) is the title song "Be My Thrill"...especially suiting for those who have a noteworthy other in their life...teehee...

friday? finally!
if you haven't seen Pushing Daisies, it's a MUST see. I was so bummed when it got cancelled after only airing for two seasons. I am always inspired by Chuck's wardrobe (played by British actor Anna Friel) It's so cheerful and I am always inspired by her hair. I tried browsing the internet for more images, but these are the only ones I found.

I guess this means that you'll just have to watch and look out for lovely outfits!

Sigh, my hair will be this length someday.

today I'm particularly nostalgic as the rain is pouring down, and I'm listening to Yann Tiersen.
I met Ashley in Budapest, seems like a lifetime ago, and I lived there for six years. It's hard to believe that I have a life so different than the one I had there. I miss it. I miss my neighborhood, the leaves changing colors in the autumn, hippy teahouses and walking around with no destination in mind.
I don't know what it is about it, but I was captivated and enchanted by its people and its difficult language. A Brazilian writer, Chico Buarque, once said, that Hungarian is the only language that the devil respects. It's true, it's hard but it's completely beautiful.

S.Carey is the Bon Iver percussionist. Just recently listening to my last themes on lastfm, I came across his song, "In the Dirt." It's gorgeous. One of those songs in which you travel to far off galaxies, filled with a millions stars that surround you and as you walk, your footprints step on stardust. There's a bit of sadness to it though, as if this longing, of going somewhere to stay away for a while, is too overwhelming.

Inspired by Justin Vernon, who as we all know, secluded himself in a cabin with a broken heart, and came out with the amazing album, "For Emma, Forever Ago," in which we see the process of a man mending a broken heart, and coming out stronger. This album spoke to me in such a way, that when I found that that S. Carey was a part of this, that it made me like him just a bit more.

okay, Ash, after this one, it's your turn for a string of posts =) this is what I wore yesterday. during the summertime, I love wearing dresses, it just seems like the perfect article to lie down in the sun, and summer to me just seems like it's all about the light dresses and sandals. when I found this, I just had to get it, it's just screams summer, and I see myself wearing it everyday (I probably will!) like today, I changed the vest for a little cropped jacket and strappy sandals for work.

I'm not sure how to start this first post. Recently, I watched, for the millionth time, the movie directed by Kar Wai Wong, "My Blueberry Nights," not only is Jude Law in it (seriously, what movie isn't this man good in? that's rheotorical, by the way) but also one of my favorite singer/songwriters, Norah Jones. When I heard she was in it (a few years ago), I just had to see it. So I saw it online and recently bought the movie for myself.

The movie in itself has eye-catching photography, use of contrasting colors and warm shots, and even though there isn't much to the story, it is a journey about self-discovery. A girl, with a broken heart, goes on a road trip to get over her lover and finds out that life is much more complicated than a set of keys to an apartment. Seems cliché, but somehow, it isn't.

"The last few days, I've been learning not to trust people and I'm glad I've failed. Sometimes we depend on other people as a mirror to define us and tell us who we are and each reflection makes me like myself a little more."

Gah, I can't believe that was a decade ago. I wore this awful slinky purple number with a sequence bodice. The icing on the cake was the velvet shoulder shrug. I mean, what else completes an outfit but a dash of velvet?!

Anyways, this weekend was my baby sis's freshman homecoming. Makes me wish I would've had a big sis to keep me from my horrid fashion faux pas! Oh well, as long as those photos stay stashed away...forever...
